Protests erupt across China

A deadly fire at an apartment building in Urumqi on Thursday killed 10 people and injured nine others, igniting public outrage, as videos emerged suggesting that lockdown measures delayed firefighters from reaching the victims. On Saturday, protests broke out all over China, including in Shanghai and at universities. Students held gatherings or put up posters on dozens of college campuses to mourn the victims of the Xinjiang fire and to protest zero-Covid. Following widespread anti-lockdown demonstrations that swept Urumqi on Friday night, locals in lockdown neighborhoods tore down fences and took to the streets in a number of cities. I have mixed feelings about these protests. On one side it's good that people are fighting against communist leader Xi, but on the other side China is recording all-time highest covid cases since the pandemic began. Chinese government has done a good job saving peoples lifes from covid so far but, it dealt a punishing blow to the economy - big companies that own factories in China are losing workers etc.

  1. There are so many other things the could and should be protesting about, like human rights violations, labour camps, lack of religious freedom, etc. These protests will probably end like all the others before - lots of people will be arrested, blackmailed, thrown out of work and the rest will give up.
